Unclaimed property in Utah could mean money in the pockets of some Uintah Basin residents. Presenting at the Vernal Area Chamber of Commerce luncheon on Tuesday, the Treasurer for the State of Utah, David Damschen, explained that there is $2.2 million dollars in unclaimed money in Uintah County alone. Unclaimed property is intangible property such as savings accounts, certificates of deposit, utility refunds, un-cashed checks, stocks or contents of safe deposit boxes, that have been unclaimed or abandoned. If the property in question has not had any activity for a certain period of time, usually three years, and the holder is unable to locate the property owner, then it is considered abandoned and is reported to the Unclaimed Property Division of the State Treasurer’s Office. In order to reunite unclaimed property with its rightful owner, the State of Utah has created the website

where anyone can do a simple search to see if they are entitled to a piece of that $2.2 million dollars. Treasurer Damschen encouraged residents Basin wide to visit the website to see.
