In a demonstration by Pickett Pest Control to the Vernal Area Chamber of Commerce a special trained dog showed its abilities to sniff out bedbugs. One person in the room was planted with the pests and the dog sniffed that individual out. A fallacy of bedbugs is that they are a city or “dirty” place problem but the truth is that they have become a common occurance wherever there is a food source. In fact, the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) reports that 97% of pest professionals have treated for bedbugs in the last year and that 69% of those professionals are seeing a bedbug increase. The little pests like to hide in dark and protected places like your mattress, box springs, furniture and bed frame. They can fit in cracks and crevices such as baseboards, carpets, window frames, outlets, and switch plates. The best way to stay ahead is to inspect and be aware of the signs. Look for welts on exposed skin, black fecal spots, skin sheds and eggshells, blood stains from crushed bugs, and live bugs. If it is a severe infestation there can be a sweet or musty odor. It is possible to eradicate bedbugs but you will need to involve professionals.
