Roosevelt City is using their social media platforms to promote mental health awareness and this week posted a profound thought for residents to consider. Body image is a huge factor in mental health. Sadly, it is a norm for women and girls to hate their bodies, thinking that they are not worthy of confidence or feeling empowered because they have not met some unreal standard. Studies show such negative body images can cause depression, disordered eating, anxiety, mood disorders and might lead to suicide. To drive home the point, Roosevelt City shared a quote from Lindsay Kite, PhD. “Having positive body image isn’t believing your body looks good; it is believing your body is good, regardless of how it looks. It isn’t thinking you are beautiful; it is knowing you are more than beautiful. It is understanding that your body is an instrument for your use, not an ornament to be admired.” Follow the Roosevelt City page for city updates and their #MentalHealthMinute.
