The Uintah/Daggett Children’s Justice Center wants to remind the Basin that October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. We might not think it but domestic violence does exist in our community. You might know a survivor or you might be one yourself. It takes a lot of courage to come forward. Even more so for children. One thing we can do as adults is to listen and take them seriously. Sadly, 90% percent of the children that suffer abuse will never tell anyone. Some of the tips that the Uintah/Daggett Children’s Justice Center has is to be sure to remain calm and not to overreact. Believe the child and allow them to talk without pressing them or overwhelming them with questions. Be sure to show interest and concern while reassuring and supporting the child. Do not blame or minimize the child’s feelings or make promises for anything you can not control. Never confront the offender. Be sure to always take action by contacting local authorities.
