Local students are learning from a nationwide program that offers interdisciplinary applications. The ‘Trout In The Classroom’ program reaches beyond science as classes raise trout from eggs before releasing them in an approved nearby watershed. Locally, the Division of Wildlife Resources issues a Certificate of Registration to each school with classrooms participating and the Jones Hole Fish Hatchery issues the rainbow trout eggs to the classrooms. The local Trout Unlimited chapter is also involved, serving as the liaison to the classrooms as this is a Trout Unlimited program. Classrooms at Terra Academy, Vernal Middle School, Uintah High School, and Discovery, Ashley, Davis, and Lapoint Elementary Schools received their eggs back in September and October. “The teachers in the Basin love the interaction the students get with the wildlife,” shares DWR Outreach Manager Tonya Kieffer-Selby. “Once students have successfully raised their eggs, the baby fish or ‘fry’ [are expected to be released] this spring in the NEW Community Fishery, Old Fort Pond.”
