Things are looking better for those in the Basin that are in need of indigent defense services. A grant of $592,850 dollars was given to Daggett, Duchesne and Uintah counties from the Utah Indigent Defense Commission. “The goal of the new model is to more fully protect the 6th Amendment rights of indigent individuals by hiring additional attorneys to help reduce caseloads,” says Lance Dean, Uintah County’s first managing public defender. “Money has also been allocated to hire a defense investigator and employ expert witnesses when needed.” This 13-month grant will also aid in funding an additional juvenile court contract attorney in Uintah County, fund an additional district court contract attorney in Uintah County, increase funds available for legal training relevant to indigent defense, increase funds available for appellate representation, and increase amounts held in reserve funds for defense resources and transcripts in all three counties. The grant is divided with $115,000 going to Duchesne County and $477,850 split between Daggett and Uintah Counties. To put it in perspective, this grant represents 40 percent of the Uintah County annual budget for indigent defense.
