A fire near the Dinosaur National Monument Headquarters in Moffat County shut down Highway 40 on Wednesday. Dinosaur National Monument reports that at 2:20pm on August 21st, a visitor reported a wildfire north of Highway 40 and adjacent to the Canyon Visitor Center/Monument Headquarters. The Dinosaur Headquarters Fire was estimated on Wednesday night to be 160 acres and moving east. “It is burning on both sides of Highway 40 and affecting power lines in the area,” shares Dinosaur National Monument. “Multiple agencies quickly responded to the fire including the Bureau of Land Management, Artesia Volunteer Fire Department, Jensen Volunteer Fire Department, Rangely Volunteer Fire Department, Naples Fire Department, Moffat County Fire and Sheriff, and the National Park Service. Multiple air resources were used, including a large air tanker to drop retardant on the blaze.” Highway 40 had to be closed and alternate routes taken.
